Hamas Forms New Gov't Without Fatah

The Palestinians' incoming Prime Minister suggested today that Hamas could one day make peace with Israel, but immediately undercut his statement by saying his group wouldn't disarm nor will they recognize Israel unless it recognized a Palestinian state within boundaries that the Israelis reject.

Israel dismissed the comments as doubletalk.

Haniyeh said that he would present the new line-up to Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas during a meeting in Gaza City today. "I believe that President Abbas will approve the new cabinet - a move that will enable us to present it to the Palestinian Legislative Council for a vote of confidence," Haniyeh said. Although Haniyeh declared that the international community should expect a "big surprise" when the new cabinet announces its political program, sources close to Hamas said the program, which consists of 10 points, calls for pursuing the fight "in all forms" against the "occupation."

Meanwhile, there are calls for Abbas, head of the Fatah party, to resign as president and to dissolve the Fatah party, instructing all Palestinians to join Hamas. Whether or not he "approves" of Haniyeh's list of candidates is immaterial. Hamas will plunge ahead on the laurels of its electoral win.

Here is the list of appointees as we presently have them: Ismail Haniya – prime minister; Mahmoud al-Zahar – foreign minister (could be real trouble - very radical); Said Siyam from Gaza - interior minister with responsibility for Palestinian security services; Dr. Omar Abdel-Razeq from Salfit, who was in Israeli administration detention until last week – finance ; Dr. Nasser a-Din Shaar from Nablus – education; Abdel Rahim Hanbali from Nablus – agriculture; Dr. Abu Aysha from Nablus - planning; Abdel Jawad from Salfit - minister for Palestinian prisoners; Naif Rajoub from Hebron (brother of Fatah leader Jabril Rajoub) - the key post of minister of holy foundations; and Faraj al Ghoul, from Gaza – justice. Sons of the Ghoul clan are senior commanders of the Hamas military wing Ezz-e Din al-Qassem Brigades, whose record includes orchestrating and executing some of the deadliest of Hamas’s 60 suicide attacks on Israelis. Please note that ALL the ministerial posts are taken by Hamas members - 14 from the Gaza Strip and 10 from the West Bank. Abbas and Fatah have been completely left out.
